[New York, May 10, 2023] – Foreign Territory is excited to announce its participation in the upcoming Volta Art Fair, where it will offer a dynamic exhibition titled NOW, featuring five paintings by Lithuanian artist Martynas Gediminas and a sculpture by Iraq-born artist Sasson Soffer. Additionally, NOW features artifacts from writer J. C. Hallman and two textural chairs, titled “yesterday and today” by Zdravko Toic. DJ Vinqus offers music to enhance the visitor’s experience of the present moment.

If there is space,

someone will fill it.

Black, the color of space, fills with all the colors.

Space becomes transparent,

never overshadowing the sense

with colors and forms.

Dissolving the frames and borders,

the two of us met: Sasson Soffer and Martynas Gediminas.

Two people

from different worlds,

from different times,

but … now!

Martynas Gediminas (Lithuania 1974) is an artist currently exploring materiality and texture through experimentation with acrylic paint. In the paintings displayed in NOW Gediminas uses bold black brushstrokes as an invitation toward transparency. Looking through the layers, the viewer journeys from gazing at a distant moon to the intimate immediacy of the surface. Artist Sasson Soffer (Iraq 1925-2009) was born to a Jewish family in Iraq, and escaped the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, eventually making his way to New York. The exhibited sculpture offers a structured counterpoint to the expansive fields of Gediminas’ paintings, with its metal angles offering new perspectives of an architecture of the imagination. Both artists came to New York from different times and worlds, and their work converges in conversation in NOW.

VOLTA Contemporary Art Fair debuted in New York in 2008. Now, VOLTA returns to the city to showcase over 40 international galleries at the Metropolitan Pavilion from May 17 -21, 2023, at 125 West 18th Street, NYC, NY.
